Artist's Description

I captured this image of a maple tree in the brilliant but soft light of a late fall afternoon. I knew that the contrast between the limbs, leaves, and granite wall might create an interesting composition … but could I capture it? Looking through my viewfinder, I experimented with different framing, focal points, and depth of field. Finally, after much fiddling, the image suddenly resolved in my viewfinder and I snapped the shutter. The sensation I felt was equivalent to that of the safecracker who is listening to the tumblers of a safe; he finally hears the last loud click and knows he has cracked the safe open. That’s what I felt when I saw the image in my viewfinder and made the exposure.

About Dana Sohr

Dana Sohr

For 50 years, I have been photographing what Plato called the "Four Elements" -- earth, water, sky, and fire (sun). Photography has transformed me … not just in the way I experience and observe the world, but in the way I express myself. It puts my head where my feet are. It inspires me to closely observe the beauty and wonder of our world and to capture it in its most elemental forms. My philosophy in photography is to reduce the world to simple, essential compositions, to seek out epic light and color, and to share what I find with you. I hope you enjoy my work.
